Evening

Evening

Watch,dear Lord,
With those who wake,or watch,or weep tonight,
And give your angels charge over those who sleep.
Tend your sick ones,O Lord Christ,
Rest your weary ones.
Bless your dying ones.
Soothe your suffering ones.

Pity your afflicted ones.
And all for your love’s sake.                                                Augustine of Hippo

Lighten our darkness,Lord,we pray;
and in your mercy defend us
from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of your only Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ.                             Third Collect at Evening Prayer (ASB)

for aid against all perils
BCP form : -

Lighten our darkness,we beseech thee,O Lord;
And by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
For the love of thy only Son,our Saviour,Jesus Christ.

Visit we beseech thee,O Lord,this house and family,
And drive far from it all the snares of the enemy;
Let thy holy angels dwell herein,
Who may keep us in peace,
And let thy blessing be always with us.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.                               From the Office of Compline

Into your hands,O Lord,I commend my spirit,
For you have redeemed me,O Lord God of Truth.
I will lay down in peace,and take my rest,
For it is you,Lord,only who make me live in safety.

Be with us,O merciful God,
And protect us through the silent hours of this night,
So that we who are wearied
By the changes and chances of this fleeting world,
May rest upon your eternal changelessness,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
                         Ancient Collect from Compline (and from Gelasian Sacramentary)

Holy Spirit,
I thank you for the quiet moments of this busy day
When you spoke to me in your abiding love.
Teach me now as I lay down to rest
How to listen to you in the silence of my heart.
Teach me how to listen to your still small voice
Which gives meaning and direction to my life.                        Michael Buckley

O God,from whom all holy desires,all good counsels,and all just works do proceed;
Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give;
That both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments,
And also that,by thee,we being defended from the fear of our enemies,
May pass our time in rest and quietness;
Through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour.                        BCP

We thank you,O Lord and Master,
For teaching us how to pray simply and sincerely to you,
And for hearing us when we so call upon you.
We thank you for saving us from our sins and sorrows,
And for directing all our ways this day.
Lead us ever onwards to yourself;
For the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
                                                      Father John of the Russian Orthodox Church

Send your peace into my heart,O Lord,
That I may be contented with the mercies of this day
and confident of your protection for this night;
And having forgiven others,even as you forgive me,
May I go to rest in tranquillity and trust;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                          St.Francis of Assisi

O God our Father,by whose mercy and might the world turns
Safely into darkness and returns again to light :
We give into thy hands
our unfinished tasks,
our unsolved problems,
and our unfulfilled hopes,
Knowing that only that which thou dost bless will prosper.
To thy great love and protection we commit each other
and all those we love,
Knowing that thou alone art our sure defender,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                   The Church of South India

Preserve us,O Lord,while waking,
And guard us while sleeping,
That awake we may watch with Christ,
And asleep we may rest in peace.                                      From Compline

Now,into thy keeping of God I put
All doings of today,
All disappointments,
hindrances,
forgotten things,
negligences,
All gladness and beauty,
love,
delight,
achievement .
All that people have done for me,
All that I have done for them,
my work and my prayers.
And I commit all the people whom I love
to his shepherding,
to his healing and restoring,
to his calling and making;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                           Margaret Cropper
