Save us,Lord,
From being self-centred in our prayers,
And teach us to remember to pray for others.
May we be so caught up in love for those for whom we pray,
That we may feel their needs as keenly as our own,
And pray for them with imagination,sensitivity,and knowledge.
We ask this in Christ’s name. John Calvin
O God,Almighty Father,King of kings and Lord of all our rulers,
Grant that the hearts and minds of all who go out as leaders before us,
The statesmen,the judges,the men of learning,and the men of wealth,
May be so filled with the love of thy laws,
And of that which is righteous and life-giving,
That they may serve as a wholesome salt unto the earth,
And be worthy stewards of thy good and perfect gifts;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Prayer of the Order of the Garter 1348
O God of Love,we pray Thee to give us love :
Love in our thinking,love in our speaking,
Love in our doing,
And love in the hidden places of our souls;
Love of neighbours near and far;
Love of friends,old and new;
Love of those with whom we find it hard to bear,
And love of those who find it hard to bear with us;
Love of those with whom we work,
And love of those with whom we take our ease;
Love in joy,love in sorrow;
Love in life,and love in death;
That so at length we may be worthy to dwell with Thee,
Who art eternal Love. William Temple
We beg you,Lord,to help and defend us.
Deliver the oppressed,
Pity those who count for little in the world;
Raise the fallen,
Show youself to the needy,
Heal the sick,
Bring back those of your people who have gone astray,
Feed the hungry,
Lift up the weak,
Set the prisoners free.
May all nations come to know that you alone are God,
That Jesus Christ is your Child,
That we are your people,the sheep of your pasture. St.Clement of Rome
Comfort,we ask you,most gracious God,
All who are cast down and faint of heart
amidst the sorrows and difficulties of the world :
And grant that,by the quickening power of the Holy Spirit,
they may be lifted up to you with hope and courage,
And enabled to go upon their way
rejoicing in your love :
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. R.M.Benson
Grant us grace,O Father,not to pass by suffering or joy without eyes to see.
Give us understanding and sympathy,and guard us from selfishness,
That we may enter into the joys and sufferings of others.
Use us to gladden and strengthen those who are weak and suffering;
That by our lives we may help others to believe and serve thee,
And shed forth thy light which is the light of life. H.R.L. ‘Dick’ Sheppard
Almighty and most merciful Father,
Who hast taught us not to think of ourselves only,
But also of the wants of others,
We remember before thee all those who are
burdened and oppressed,
those whose hopes have been crushed
and whose purposes are overthrown.
We remember also those who are afflicted by poverty,
or worn down by sickness and disease,
those who are in darkness or despair,
or who are suffering for righteousness’ sake.
Help them all,O Lord,to rest in thee for comfort and strength.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Professor W.A.Knight
For those we love
We call to mind,O God,before thy throne of grace
All those whom thou hast given to be near and dear to us,
And all for whom we are specially bound to pray;
Beseeching thee to remember them all for good,
And to fulfil as may be expedient for them all their desires and wants.
We commend to thee any who may have wronged us,by word or deed,
Beseeching thee to forgive them and us all our sins,
And to bring us to thy heavenly kingdom;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Bishop Gavin Hamilton
For those who Travel
We call on you for those who travel :
Graciously grant them an Angel of Peace
to be the companion of their way,
That they may not suffer any hurt at the hands of anyone,
That they may accomplish their travels and their journeys
with great tranquillity. Serapion of Thmuis
For Peace
O Almighty God,the Father of all mankind,
We pray thee to turn to thyself the hearts
of all peoples and their rulers,
That by the power of thy Holy Spirit
Peace may be established on the foundation of
justice,righteousness and truth;
Through Him who was lifted up on the cross to
draw all men unto Himself,
Even thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. William Temple
For the Sanctity of Life
Lord God Almighty,our Creator,teach us
To understand more and more profoundly that every human life is sacred,
Whether it belongs to
An unborn infant,
or to a terminally-ill patient,
to a handicapped child,
or to a disabled adult.
Remind us,heavenly Father,that each individual has been made
in your image and likeness and has been redeemed by Christ.
Help us to see each other with your eyes,
So that we may reverence,preserve and sustain your gift of life in them,
And use our own lives more faithfully in your service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Cardinal Basil Hume
