St.Edward the Confessor (13th October)

St Edward the Confessor

Almighty Father,
Who set your servant Edward upon the throne of an earthly kingdom,
And,by the grace of your Spirit,
Inspired him with zeal for the kingdom of your dear Son :
Grant us so faithfully to love and serve you in this life,
That with him we may inherit the kingdom of your glory;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                                                                   The Cloud of Witnesses

Sovereign God,
Who set your servant Edward
upon the throne of an earthly kingdom
And inspired him with a zeal for the kingdom of heaven;
Grant that we may so confess the faith of Christ
by word and deed,
That we may,with all your saints,inherit your eternal glory;
Through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
Who is alive and reigns with you,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God,now and for ever.                                                                                           Common Worship

St.Hugh,Bishop of Lincoln (17th November)

St Hugh of Lincoln

Almighty father,who gave to your servant Hugh many excellent gifts of your Spirit,
And made him a loving shepherd of your people;
Grant that the bishops and pastors of your Church may follow his example,
in holy living and in love of souls.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                  The Cloud of Witnesses

O God,
Who endowed your servant Hugh
With a wise and cheerful boldness
And taught him to commend to earthly rulers
the discipline of a holy life;
Give us grace like him to be bold in the service of the gospel,
putting our confidence in Christ alone,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God,now and for ever.                                         Common Worship

St. John the Baptist

Birth of (24th June)

St John the Baptist

Almighty God,
Whose servant John the Baptist
Was wonderfully born to fulfil your purpose
By preparing the way for the advent of your Son :
Lead us to repent according to his preaching
And after his example
Constantly to speak the truth,boldy rebuke vice,
And patiently suffer for the truth’s sake;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                                                                                                           ASB

Almighty God,
By whose providence your servant John the Baptist
was wonderfully born,
And sent to prepare the way of your Son our Saviour
by the preaching of repentance :
Lead us to repent according to his preaching
And,after his example,
Constantly to speak the truth,boldly to rebuke vice,
And patiently to suffer for the truth’s sake;
Through Jesus Christ your son our Lord,
Who is alive and reigns with you,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,

Beheading of  (29th  August)

St John the Baptist

Almighty God,
Who called your servant John the Baptist
To be the forerunner of your Son in birth and death :
Strengthen us by your grace
That,as he suffered for the truth,
So we may boldly resist corruption and vice
And receive with him the unfading crown of glory;
Through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
Who is alive and reigns with you,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God,now and for ever.                                                                                                      Common Worship
