Peace, Rest and Refuge

Peace

O God,
Make us children of quietness,
And heirs of peace.                                        Clement of Rome

To thee,O god,we turn for peace.
Grant us the blessed assurance that nothing shall deprive us of that peace,
Neither ourselves,
Nor our foolish earthly desires,
Nor my wild longings,
Nor the anxious cravings of my heart.             Søren Kierkegaard

Eternal God,the refuge of all your children,
In our weakness,you are our strength,
In our darkness,our light,
In our sorrows,our comfort and peace.
May we always live in your presence,
And serve you in our daily lives;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                                                                                             St. Boniface

Good Jesus,
Strength of the weary.
Rest of the restless,
By the weariness and unrest of your sacred cross,
Come to me who am weary that I may rest in you.                                                                                                           E.B. Pusey

Strengthen me,O God,by the grace of your Holy Spirit;
Grant me to be strengthened with the might of the inner man,
And to put away from my heart all useless anxiety and distress,
And let me never be distracted by various longings,
whether they are useless or precious;
But may I view all things as passing away,
And myself as passing away with them.
Grant me prudently to avoid the one who flatters me,
And patiently to bear with the one who contradicts me;
For it is a mark of great wisdom not to be moved by every wind of words
or to be influenced by wicked flattery;
For thus we will go on securely in the course we have begun.                                                   Thomas à Kempis

Grant,Lord God,
That in the middle of all the discouragements,difficulties
and dangers,distress and darkness of this mortal life,
I may depend on your mercy,
And on this build my hopes,as a sure foundation.
Let your infinite mercy in Christ Jesus deliver me
from despair,both now and at the hour of death.                                                                                                             Thomas Wilson

O Lord,
Take from me a careful heart in all worldly things,
And grant that neither poverty oppress me and drive me to
despair or falsehood,
Nor prosperity lift me up to forget thee or myself;
But that in prosperity I may be thankful,
And in adversity patient and humble.
Make me merry without lightness,
Sad without mistrust,
Sober without dullness,
Fearing thee without desperation,
Trusting in thee without presumption.                                                                             Henry Bull

Guide me,O lord,
In all the changes and varieties of the world;
That in all things that shall happen,
I may have an evenness and tranquillity of spirit;
That my soul may be wholly resigned
to thy divinest will and pleasure,
Never murmuring at thy gentle chastisements
and fatherly correction..                                 Jeremy Taylor

Lord,teach us to number our days,
That we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Lighten,if it be thy will,the pressures of this world’s cares.
Above all,reconcile us to thy will,
And give us a peace which the world cannot take away;
Through our Saviour Jesus Christ.                                                                            Thomas Chalmers

O Lord,calm the waves of this heart; calm its tempest !
Calm yourself,O my soul,so that the divine can act in you !
Calm yourself,O my soul,so that God is able to repose in you,
so that his peace may cover you !
Yes,Father in heaven,often have we found that the world cannot
Give us peace.
O but make us feel that you are able to give peace;
Let us know the truth of your promise;
That the whole world may not be able to take away your peace.                                                        Søren Kierkegaard

Eternal God,the refuge of all your children,
In our weakness you are our strength,
In our darkness our light,
In our sorrow our comfort and peace.
May we always live in your presence,
and serve you in our daily lives;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.                      St. Boniface

O blessed Jesus,
Give me stillness of my soul in thee.
Let thy mighty calmness reign in me;
Rule me,O King of gentleness,King of peace.
Give me control,great power of self-control,
Control over my words,thoughts and actions.
From all irritability,want of meekness,want of gentleness,
dear Lord,deliver me.
By thine own deep patience,give me patience.
Make me in this and all things more and more like thee.                                                      St.John of the Cross

O Blessed Jesus,
Give me stillness of soul in Thee,
Let Thy mighty calmness rule in me.
Rule me,O Thou King of gentleness,King of Peace.
Give me control,great power of self-control,
Control over my thoughts,words,actions.
from all irritability,
want of meekness,
want of gentleness
Dear Lord deliver me.
By Thine own deep patience,
give me patience,
stillness of  soul in Thee.
Make me in this and in all,
More and more like Thee.

O God,
Take all our sorrows and use them to show us the nature of your joy.
Take all our sins and,forgiving them,use them to show us the ways
of true pleasantness and the path of true peace.
Take all our broken purposes and disappointed hopes and use them
to make your perfect rainbow arch.
Take all our clouds of sadness and calamity and from them make
your sunset glories.
Take our night and make it bright with stars.
Take our ill-health and pain until they accomplish in your purpose
as much as health could achieve.
Take us as we are with impulses,strivings,longings so often frustrated and thwarted
and even with what is broken and imperfect,make your dreams come true,
Through him who
made of human life a sacrament,
of thorns a crown,
of a cross a throne,
Even through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                                                                                     Leslie D.Weatherhead
